What's On in the Adelaide Hills

We live at Norton Summit and run a farm stay here, which means we spend a lot of time answering the question "what's actually on this weekend?" for guests. This page is our answer, and we update it every Friday.

It covers the whole region: Hahndorf, Stirling, Woodside, Uraidla, Mount Barker, Oakbank, Lobethal and the villages in between. Markets, cellar door events, live music, and the things worth driving up for.

This weekend

Sunday is Father's Day, and half the Hills has put on a roast. The Royal Adelaide Show also opens Saturday.

Music under the gums at Norton Summit. Sinclair's Gully, 288 Colonial Drive. Sunday, doors 12.30pm, music 1-3pm, $15. Hannah Margaret plays an acoustic set under the candlebark gums: Fleetwood Mac, The Cranberries, Paul Kelly, The Church, Coldplay. Bring a picnic and your own glasses; no food at the venue, wine glasses $5. No BYO alcohol, but wine, beer and soft drink are for sale. Marquee if it rains. Bookings through TryBooking.

Father's Day lunches, all Sunday 6 September. Ambleside Distillers at Hahndorf from 11am, four courses around slow-roasted lamb shoulder, sold out last year. Glen Ewin Estate at Houghton, $81 adult and $30 child, with live acoustic music and a beer for Dad on arrival. Simon Tolley Cellar Door at Woodside, two sittings, Prancing Pony beer and cornhole on the lawn, dogs welcome. Classic Motor Studio at Totness from 12pm, $85 and $35, Mediterranean lunch cooked over charcoal among classic cars. Cobb's Hill Estate at Oakbank from 11am, terrace set menu $95 and $40 or garden pinsa and platter $60 and $30.

The Royal Adelaide Show opens Saturday 5 September at Wayville, gates 9am, running nine days. New rides include Warrior at 55 metres, Lunarix and VOID, and there are over 100 free activities once you're inside.

Markets in the Adelaide Hills

These run on a fixed cycle, so you can plan around them.

Adelaide Hills Farmers Market: every Saturday 8.30am to 12.30pm, Mann Street, Mount Barker. Artisan stalls on the first Saturday of the month, sustainable living on the third.

Uraidla Market: first and third Sunday, 10am to 3pm. Currently in the church next to the Institute while the Institute is refurbished.

Stirling Market: fourth Sunday, 10am to 4pm, Druid Avenue. Stirling Laneways runs alongside it from September to April.

Woodside Craft and Produce Market: third Saturday, 7.30am to 1pm, Woodside Institute.

The Hills through the year

Spring brings blossom to the Lenswood and Forest Range orchards, budburst in the vineyards, baby animals and wildflowers. It's the best walking weather of the year.

Summer is long lunches and cellar doors with lawns, and the pick-your-own season at Beerenberg. It gets hot and dry, so check the CFS app before heading into bushland.

Autumn is the Hills at their best looking. Vintage in the vineyards, colour through Stirling and Aldgate, and the right weather for mushrooms.

Winter means fireplaces, cosy pubs and mist through the gums. Quieter, cheaper, and arguably the most atmospheric time to be up here.

Staying up here

Most of what's on this page is a fair drive from Adelaide and better with a night attached. We run Funday Farm at Norton Summit: 14 beds on 28 acres of forest, exclusive use, with a heated pool, a games shed and a flight simulator.

Sinclair's Gully is five minutes away. Hahndorf and Woodside are about twenty. The city is half an hour.
